How to choose the right stud of A193 Gr B8 and A193 Gr B8 for the application environment?

Stainless steel A193 Gr B8 studs and A193 Gr B8M studs are widely used in chemical industry, marine, Oil, ship and energy due to their excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.

A193 Gr B8 studs are made of austenitic stainless steel 304 type (UNS S30400), containing 18% chromium and 8% nickel, which gives them excellent corrosion resistance.

A193 Gr B8M studs are made of austenitic stainless steel 316 type (UNS S31600). Compared with B8, B8M studs contain 2% to 3% molybdenum, which enhances their corrosion resistance, especially for chloride-induced crevice corrosion, especially for chloride-containing environments (such as seawater, salt spray). Therefore, A193 Gr B8M studs are very suitable for use in marine environments, chemical industries and other scenarios with high corrosion resistance requirements.

Conventional industrial environments: petroleum refining equipment, pressure vessels, heat exchangers.

Weakly corrosive media: water, steam, air and general chemical solvents.

The selection of A193 B8 and A193 B8M stainless steel studs requires a comprehensive consideration of corrosiveness, temperature and economic cost. In scenarios with high risk of chloride ion corrosion, the addition of molybdenum to the A193 Grade B8M stud bolts makes it a better choice.
